Liberal investment into indigenous communities overcomes 2% funding cap
Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Carolyn Bennet said Indigenous people in Canada have suffered economic and social inequities in the country for too long.
Bennett said healthy and thriving indigenous communities contribute to a healthy and thriving Canada – and praised the federal governments multi billion dollar investment in the 2016 federal budget.
Bennet said by 2021 total funding for Indigenous programs will be 22 per cent above what would have been provided under the previous two per cent funding cap.
The Minister said investments in infrastructure, child and family services, and on-reserve education will help ensure Indigenous children receive the best possible start in life and improve living conditions and economic prosperity in the North.
