Provinces support national inquiry on missing and murdered indigenous women
Provincial premieres have agreed to support and cooperate with a national inquiry into the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls in Canada.
The premieres gathered at a national roundtable discussion on the issue in Winnipeg last week.
Indigenous Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett said the provinces cooperation is an important step forward.
Indigenous officials involved in facilitating the national inquiry were concerned it would become a jurisdictional battle between provincial and federal standards.
That means the commission will examine issues under provincial jurisdiction, including health care, child welfare, and policing.
Provincial involvment means issues surrounding policing, education and child welfare will also be a part of the inquiry.
Ottawa is estimating the national inquiry will begin sometime this summer.
