Algonquins vote No to modern treaty
00
The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation have voted against accepting a “modern treaty” Agreement In Principle with Canada and Ontario.
Pikwaknagan is the only community out of ten listed with the Algonquins of Ontario that is a recognized First Nations band of Status Indians.
Pikwaknagan announced they will officially be stepping back from the AOO claim to address specific issues raised within their membership that led to the ‘no’ vote.
Of the remaining 9 communities within the Algonquins of Ontario, less than half the eligible voters participated – 90% in favour of the Agreement In Principle with the governments of Canada and Ontario.
