Last week, the Office of the Correctional Investigator said between 2005 and 2015 the indigenous prisoner population in both male and female facilities grew by over 50%.
The report also says that although indigenous people make up just 4% of the population in Canada that the number of indigenous women currently in custody is now about 35% of the entire prison population – nearly double the amount previously reported.
The report examines Canada’s federal prisons, including recommendations for reform, accountability, and greater respect of prisoners’ rights.
