NDP Charlie Angus criticizes liberal funding to on reserve child welfare
NDP MP Charlie Angus said this week an Indigenous family was forced to go to court in an attempt to force the Liberal government to provide badly-needed orthodontic care.
Angus criticized the Liberals for failing to implementing the Canadian Human Rights tribunals remedies by implementing Jordon’s principle in this case.
Jordan’s Principle ensures Indigenous children in the child welfare system will receive necessary medical care without having to fight a jurisdictional battle.
Earlier this year the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruled that Canada was guilty of racially discriminating against First Nations children in the child welfare system.
Angus said although there is a ruling by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ordering Ottawa to stop systematically denying medical services to Indigenous children, the government is still fighting Indigenous families in court.
Angus has written to Health Minister Jane Philpott over the failure to respect the Tribunal ruling.
