NDP MP Romeo Saganash has tabled a bill in parliament calling for a full and comprehensive implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples..
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau indicated as part of his election campaign that he would fully adopt and implement the UN declaration as a framework for reconciliation.
Grand Chief Dr. Matthew Coon Come said the bill provides opportunity for Canada to put indigenous communities on a path of healing and inclusion by working to eliminate poverty and the kinds of intolerable living conditions that produce epidemic suicides among First Nations youth.
